Deanna’s first month at La Bicicleta Verde

Deanna’s First Month at LBV

To say my first month has flown by would be an understatement. It seems like just yesterday I was on my way to work for the first time! I have learned so much in the past 30 days, and I’ll share some of those lessons with you now.

By now, you’ve probably heard that Chileans use a lotttttt of slang. If you don’t know the slang, it’s hard to know what the heck anyone is talking about! So my Chilean coworkers have been teaching me a lot of words that I need to know to get around Santiago. For example “cachay?” means “you get it?”, “luka” means thousands of Chilean Pesos (so 6 luka means $6,000 CLP), and many more useful words and phrases! My Spanish is improving everyday, and I also have more confidence in my ability to communicate with locals.

Within the company, I’ve learned a lot about the different departments and how they operate. I have been working mostly in customer service for La Bicicleta Verde doing bike rentals and walking tour check-ins. Fortunately, I have also been able to learn a lot about our sister companies, Chile Guru and Tours4Tips. It has been really interesting to compare business practices here in Santiago to those back home in the US.

I have met so many new friends here, both local and foreign to Chile, and I’m excited to learn from and with them! I have been planning a few weekend trips with my fellow interns, so I’m excited to explore other parts of Chile and South America so soon!

Here’s to the next 4 months in Chile!
